Special thanks from Thailand
Thailand’s royal family has personally thanked UK charity ShelterBox for the work it undertook during the country’s recent floods. The country’s Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn summoned the charity members to thank them in person for the fantastic and vital work that they carried out during the crisis.
Members of ShelterBox have been involved in providing emergency shelter to flood victims for the last two months. Throughout the flooding, the UK-based charity has provided more than 1,000 tents and 2,500 mosquito nets to those who have been displaced by the floods.
Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn met with the members, expressing his appreciation for the work carried out by ShelterBox.
ShelterBox Response Team (SRT) member Scott Robinson said: “The Prince was very impressed with our fast distribution of tents and was grateful for the work that ShelterBox has been doing to help the country.”
The group has mostly been working in Nonthaburi, situated directly north of Bangkok and part of the city’s northern sprawl. Residents of Nonthaburi suffered considerably, with thousands of homes throughout the province flooded by the huge volumes of runoff that inundated the capital.
The entire province has been virtually cut off from the rest of Bangkok due to the slow recession of floodwaters in the area.
ShelterBox pointed out that many people, including families with children, were forced to live under bridges and alongside roads in their makeshift shelters.
Members of the ShelterBox SRT team had also worked alongside the Thai Red Cross to assist with evacuation centres at schools throughout the province.
Each ShelterBox contains blankets, water storage and filtration equipment, cooking utensils, a stove, a basic tool kit, a children’s activity pack and other vital items.
